About The Bursary


The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) established the Inter-bursary Support Programme for postgraduate studies to support capacity development in key strategic and priority areas identified in key departmental strategies.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is supporting the DSI in the development of skills in these areas.

Eligibility

  1. All students who have been accepted or registered for full-time studies at any South African public university.
  2. All students who intend to register or are registered for the following:
    • Honours/fourth-year engineering/Postgraduate Diploma;
    • Master’s; and
    • Doctorate.

DSI-CSIR IBS applications are restricted to students whose degrees align with the thematic research areas and research themes/technology streams indicated below. Supervisor endorsement and motivation will be required for each bursary application for master’s and doctoral studies.

Preference will be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and people living with disabilities.

Who Can Apply


Current univeristy students accepted or registered for full-time studies at any South African university looking to complete a Honours, 4th year Engineering, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or Doctoral qualification.

Please Note: The CSIR-DSI Inter-Bursary Support Programme applications are restricted to those students whose degrees are aligned to specific thematic research areas and research themes/technology streams. Supervisor endorsement and motivation will be required with each bursary application for Masters and Doctoral applications.

Preference will be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and people living with disabilities.

Required Documents


Please prepare the following documents:

    All Applicants Must Submit

    1. Certified copy of Applicant RSA ID
    2. 2023 (or last completed qualification) end-of year Official Final Academic results (official institution report) [or police affidavit stating why student wasn't schooling]
    3. OPTIONAL- 2024 latest (June, etc) Official Academic Results (official institution report) [or police affidavit stating why student wasn't schooling]
    4. OPTIONAL- Admission Letter for 2025 Study Programme 
    5. OPTIONAL- 2024 Proof of Registration if studying in 2024 
    6. OPTIONAL- If Applicant is disabled? Submit Dept. of Labour Employment Equity Act (EEA1) Form AND a Doctors’ Letter [*]  
    7. Certified Copy of Applicant's Matric Certificate

    Masters & PHD Applicants must submit

    1. Recommendation letter by Supervisor (compulsory for master’s and doctoral applicants).

    Important Note About Documents: 

  • All certified documents must be less than 3 months old. 
  •  [*]  means: Where you have multiple documents for 1 submission, please combine/scan them into 1 file that you can upload. 

For applicants under the age of 18, to comply with POPI regulations a signed consent form completed by your parent/legal guardian along with a certified copy of their proof of identity is required.
