ABOUT THE COMPANY


The CSIR, in collaboration with the SASOL Foundation, financially supports full-time, unemployed students seeking qualifications in areas of Science, Engineering & Technology. 

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a leading scientific and technology research organisation that researches, develops, localises and diffuses technologies to accelerate socio economic prosperity in South Africa.

The organisation’s work contributes to industrial development and supports a capable state.

About The Bursary


Throughout history, science has had a critical role to play in contributing towards societal progress and prosperity. Organisations such as the SASOL & CSIR have an important role to play in advancing science and innovation. Academic merit will be considered during the selection process, and it is imperative to increase the participation of women, black individuals and people with disabilities in science, engineering and technology.

This is a comprehensive bursary, and it covers all the costs associated with university studies, such as:

  1. Registration fees
  2. Tuition fees
  3. Books
  4. Accommodation
  5. Living allowances
  6. Once-off laptop allowance 

 

Non-financial support

 

  1. Full wrap-around support and vacation work.

OBLIGATIONSYou are obligated to work-back for every year of funding provided by CSIR and Sasol Foundation, otherwise you may have to refund the value of the bursary benefits recieved (plus interest charges at the prime rate)

The UNDERGRADUATE bursary is open to academically qualifying young people and aims to attract and increase the participation of women, black individuals and people with the following qualifications: 

  1. Aeronautical Engineering
  2. Mechatronic Engineering
  3. Mechanical Engineering
  4. Computer Engineering
  5. Electronic Engineering
  6. Computer Science 
  7. Chemical Engineering 

 

Any applicant or awardee later revealed to not be studying full-time or having paid employment; will have their bursary contract/offer terminated and required to refund all benefits paid to them by the bursary. 

Who Can Apply


Current grade 12 or university students that intend to or are currently enrolled full-time for the degree of choice at a South African public university.

  • Closing date for application type:
    • 2025 SASOL FOUNDATION- CSIR Undergrad Bursary closes: Monday, 30 September 2024 at 12 midday.
  • Bursary allocation year for application type:
    • 2025 SASOL FOUNDATION- CSIR Undergrad Bursary will be allocated for the 2025 academic year

  • It is the students responsibility to apply for entrance for their intended course, university and to ensure that they are able to meet the entrance requirements stipulated for the course.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to find a suitable supervisor and to ensure the supervisor supports the application.

Required Documents


Please prepare the following documents:

    All certified documents must be less than 3 months old.

    Failure to attach Required documents may result in your application being null and void.

     

    All Applicants Must Submit 

    1. Certified copy of applicant valid South African identity document   
    2. A comprehensive CV of work experience and background 

     

    Undergraduate 

    1. Certified copy of valid matric certificate (Grade 12) 
    2. Certified copy of latest/June 2024 Official Academic Transcripts (or official institution report) [or police affidavit stating why you were not schooling] 
    3. IF APPLICABLE- Certified Full Tertiary Academic Records (for all years of tertiary study, even if at multiple institutions) [*] [or police affidavit stating why the student wasn't schooling]   
    4. IF APPLICABLE- Certified copy of 2023 end-year Official Academic Transcripts [or police affidavit stating why the student wasn't schooling] 

     

    Scholar in matric/ gap-year after matric

    1. Certified Grade 11 Report (final year-end report with official school stamp) 
    2. IF APPLICABLE - Certified copy of valid matric certificate (Grade 12)  

     

    Gap-year during tertiary

    1. IF APPLICABLE - Certified Grade 11 Report (final year-end report with official school stamp) 
    2. IF APPLICABLE - Certified Full Tertiary Academic Records (for all years of tertiary study, even if at multiple institutions) [*] [or police affidavit stating why the student wasn't schooling]   
    3. IF APPLICABLE - Certified copy of valid matric certificate (Grade 12)

     

    Other Optional Documents (for all applicants): 

    1. IF APPLICABLE- Did you get funded by another bursary/NSFAS?; upload your bursary agreement/letter/offer[*] 
    2. IF APPLICABLE - 2024 latest (June, etc) Official Academic Results (official institution report) [or police affidavit stating why you were not schooling] 
    3. IF APPLICABLE - Current Proof of Registration (if studying tertiary this year)  [or police affidavit stating why you were not schooling] 
    4. IF APPLICABLE - Have a Disability? Submit a Dept of Labour Employment Equity Act (EEA1) Form AND a Diagnosis Letter from Doctor [*] 
    5. IF APPLICABLE -  A copy of acceptance letter from an accredited institution.  Official letter showing you are accepted (even provisionally) to study the qualification in next year (2025)[*] 

For applicants under the age of 18, to comply with POPI regulations a signed consent form completed by your parent/legal guardian along with a certified copy of their proof of identity is required.
